What to check when hiring solar installers in the United Kingdom
MyTrustedTraders ranks on independent public evidence — no ads, no paid placement. Use these checks alongside the evidence on each profile before you decide who to contact.
- Look for consistent reviews across several named platforms, not one polished profile.
- Check any verified credentials, and that the business details independently check out.
- Get a written quote and keep guarantee, insurance and payment terms in writing.
- Run the Cowboy Checker before you commit to anyone.

How to judge a solar installer
Independent, no-ads guidance — the trade-specific checks that matter most, the warning signs, and what to ask before you hire. Use it alongside each trader’s public evidence above.
Verify before you hire
- Check they hold a current MCS certification — without it you cannot claim any UK government grant (ECO4, Warm Homes Plan) or Smart Export Guarantee payments.
- Confirm they are a member of RECC or HIES — both are mandatory for MCS installers and give you deposit protection and a workmanship guarantee that survives if the company folds.
- Look up their Companies House filing history: how long have they been trading, and are their accounts up to date? This sector has high insolvency rates.
- If you live in a conservation area or listed building, ask for evidence they have handled planning permission for solar in restricted areas before.
Warning signs of a cowboy
- They cannot show you a current MCS certificate — no MCS means you lose all grant entitlement and the install may be uninsurable.
- They quote unusually fast savings or promise a "government grant refund" scheme over the phone or on the doorstep — a known fraud pattern flagged by Trading Standards.
- They ask for a large deposit in cash with no written contract — the RECC/HIES consumer codes exist precisely because deposit losses are common when firms collapse.
- The company was incorporated recently (check Companies House) and is pushing you to sign quickly — new firms taking big deposits in a high-insolvency sector is a serious risk.
Questions to ask before you hire
- Can you show me your current MCS certificate and confirm you are registered with RECC or HIES right now?
- Who is your Insurance-Backed Guarantee provider, and how long does the workmanship warranty run?
- Will you handle the G98 or G99 notification to my Distribution Network Operator, and when will that be done before you switch the system on?
- How many solar installations have you completed locally, and can you point me to some in my area on the MCS Installation Database?
Frequently asked questions
- How do I choose a trustworthy solar installer?
- Compare the public evidence on each profile — how many independent reviews they have and across how many named platforms, the rating and how recent it is, any verified credentials, and the company record. A solar installer backed by several named sources is harder to fake than one with a single listing.
- Does MyTrustedTraders rank or recommend solar installers for payment?
- No. There are no ads and no paid placement. Solar installers are ranked only by the strength of independent public evidence — no one can pay to rank higher, add a badge, or change their reviews.
- Where do the reviews come from?
- They're imported from named public review platforms and always shown with the source named — they aren't reviews written on MyTrustedTraders. We cross-check the same business across sources rather than creating new reviews.
- What should I check before hiring a solar installer?
- Confirm credentials and insurance directly with the solar installer, get a written quote, and run the Cowboy Checker on the business first. MyTrustedTraders helps you shortlist on the evidence — it doesn't replace your own checks before you hire.
