Why this helps you judge trust: this trader is linked to a registered company with named people who are legally accountable for it, on an official register anyone can check, a layer of accountability an unregistered trader doesn't offer. Around 7 years on the register also points to an established business rather than a brand-new one.

Highlights

Paul did the drawings and application for me for a retrospective planning application (potentially difficult) and for new works to a Grade II listed building in Brighton. I have never used an architect before. He was recommended to me by a neighbour who had been very happy with his work. He is very easy to talk, but also very professional and efficient. He has worked on many buildings in the area (Clifton Hill), including both of my next-door neighbours so was familiar with the structure and foibles of the building which was very helpful. The drawings Paul provided are incredibly clear and professional. He dealt with the application itself too which saved me a huge headache - and it was successfully passed by the council. The price he charged seemed fair for the excellent service he provided. I would use him again and would not hesitate in recommending him to anyone who needs an architect.

Paul drew up plans for some works we wanted doing on a listed building. I'm pretty sure he ended doing more work than he originally scoped due to the fussy council officials. The plans were approved of course.

Minton Young highly recomend Paul and would go further and say he is one of the best architects we have worked with over the past few years.

Ms R Parker5.0 / 5 ·

Paul Reed managed a building project for us in 2011. He managed the project carefully and professionally. The project was critical to the sale of our property and was undertaken at short notice. Paul made sure it was completed on time and on budget. We would definitely use him again.

Having purchased a 3 bedroom Victorian property in Portslade, East Sussex I decided that I wanted to add asingle storey extension to the back of the property. Paul produced the the drawings for me and made the planning application on my behalf, his expertise and experience in such matters meant that within 8 weeks I received full planning approval with no stipulations.

M Hyde5.0 / 5 ·

We worked closely with Paul to plan a sensitively designed extension to our kitchen in a very particular conservation area of Brighton. Paul’s knowledge of the local area and what would be acceptable was invaluable. He was also very adept at creating useful 3-D designs to allow better visualisation of the finished plans. I would recommend his services to anyone else.

Worked with Paul on a new-build project in Croydon, which he managed. I found him to be tenacious and driven whilst remaining diplomatic in his dealings with all parties.

Paul reed offers a professional, first class service with a friendly personal touch. He is always willing to go the extra mile to help us out when needed. We thoroughly recommend Paul Reed for all architectural needs.

"Architect" is a title protected by law - only people on the official Architects Register (held by ARB) may use it. Confirm they're on it before you commission a design.

Check the Architects Register
Only someone on the Architects Registration Board (ARB) register may legally call themselves an 'architect' in the UK. Ask for their ARB number and check it free at arb.org.uk. An 'architectural designer' or 'technologist' is a different, unregistered role (often capable, but not the same protection).
Agree how they charge before any work starts (a percentage of the build cost, a fixed fee, or an hourly rate) and exactly which stages it covers (concept design, planning application, building-regulations drawings, work on site), so there are no surprises later.
Confirm what they will actually handle versus what is excluded (the planning application, the building-control drawings, and whether they will administer the builder's contract on site), and get it, and a portfolio of similar projects, in writing.
