Highlights

"Very quick to answer the phone and engineer came within an hour. Engineer was friendly and helpful and had my leak under my shower fixed within 3 hours that included going to get parts. Located the leak straight away, replaced the damaged pipe and replaced my shower to perfect working order. I would recommend this engineer and this company for their quick resolution to what was a serious leak on an Easter holiday weekend."

It took a bit of persuading and various quasi-pointed phone calls for me to ensure that I paid for only the agreed hour; the work spilled overtime as the pipe work which previously was not leaking started to leak after the plumber had tinkered with it. It seemed reasonable therefore to pay for only the work element, not the c. 20/30 mins required to remedy a possible quality issue. The plumber was very nice, if slow. I had to point out the leaks after it was ‘complete’. Plumber also needed assistance ordering parts - I ordered them & cleaned. This company was c. 50% more expensive than others.

Before you hire an architect

Only someone on the Architects Registration Board (ARB) register may legally call themselves an 'architect' in the UK — ask for their ARB number and check it free at arb.org.uk. An 'architectural designer' or 'technologist' is a different, unregistered role (often capable, but not the same protection).
Agree how they charge before any work starts — a percentage of the build cost, a fixed fee, or an hourly rate — and exactly which stages it covers (concept design, planning application, building-regulations drawings, work on site), so there are no surprises later.
Confirm what they will actually handle versus what is excluded — the planning application, the building-control drawings, and whether they will administer the builder's contract on site — and get it, and a portfolio of similar projects, in writing.
Ask to see a portfolio of completed work like yours, plus recent references you can contact.
Check the credentials and registrations that matter for this work — and that they are current.
